Wedding Portraits at Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake must be one of the most well known lakes in Canada, and for a good reason! The colour of this lake, the breathtaking mountain ranges surrounding the lake, and the indescribable peace that fills this spot all make for a positively surreal experience!!

To me, Moraine Lake is the perfect spot for those looking for a beautiful location for their elopement or bridal portraits!

K-Lyn and Dorian got officially married in Calgary, surrounded by the people they love, where they had an intimate ceremony at a park close by followed by an after party at their place. The next day, we met at Moraine Lake, where we took some dream wedding portraits! You don't have to elope to get your photos taken at a stunning location.

Moraine Lake is no longer open to public vehicles but you can still access the lake by booking one of the many public or private shuttle companies, or even by biking up if that's what you'd like to do (yes, e-bikes are absolutely allowed)! And while private vehicles not having access to the lake may seem like an inconvenience, this change actually does mean more privacy by reducing the amount of tourists at the lake at once, and more predictability by knowing you actually can get up if you book a ticket. Long gone are the days of parking lots being full and closed and people not being able to access the lake when they wanted. The shuttle rides up are only 25 minutes long, and you can book tickets for as cheap as $8 a person if you book one of the Parks Canada shuttles (they book up quick!)

The best time to come to do your photos at this lake is either during sunrise, or around 1 or 2 hours before sunset. This, like for many other locations, is due to the amount of tourists being less, and the lighting for your photos the most magical. Shuttle times can influence the timing of the session as well. Moraine Lake is open late May or early June and the road usually closes the first weekend of October.

Did you know that you can book a canoe at this lake? What an incredible photo prop that would be!

If you are planning on eloping in Banff National Park, or are planning on getting your wedding portraits taken somewhere beyond beautiful, I would highly recommend considering doing your session at Moraine Lake- the views never disappoint! Naty
